Summary

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Muslim calendar. It is time when Muslims concentrate more on their faith and less on their everyday lives. Throughout Ramadan, Muslims observe a strict fast during daylight hours. In the evening the fasting is broken with a prayer and a light meal (iftar). It is also traditional after the iftar for Muslims to visit with family or friends. On the 27th day of the month Muslims observe the Night of Power (Laylat-al-Qadr) which commemorates the night on which Muhammad first received his revelations from the angel Gabriel.
