Ancient Egyptian Gods


The ancient Egyptians worshipped many gods. Some of these were local to towns or cities and some were worshipped throughout Egypt. Below is a list of those that were considered most important.
     
Name of God Appearance and Other Details

Amun (Amon)
Theban king of the gods. Usually depicted as a man with a tall, ostrich-plumed hat and holding a sceptre. Also depicted as a man with the head of a ram.

Anubis
God of embalming and the dead. Usually shown as a  man with the head of a jackal.
Aten
The pharaoh Akhenaten made Aten the only god. Depicted as a sun disk with rays which end in hands.

Atum
Believed to be the first god who rose from the waters of chaos (nun) and created all the other gods. Usually shown as a man with a double crown.
Bastet
Protective goddess of cats, women and secrets. Usually depicted as a woman with the head of a cat.

Bes
Protector of pregnant women, childbirth and children. God of entertainment. Usually depicted as an ugly dwarf, often pictured holding a rattle.

Geb
God of the earth. Often depicted lying beneath the arched goddess Nut (the sky).
Hapi
God of the river Nile. Bringer of the yearly flood. Shown as a man with breasts and a pot belly carrying either lotus or papyrus plants.

Hathor
A protective goddess and the goddess of love and joy. Usually shown as a cow or a women with the horns of a cow carrying a sun disk.

Horus
God of the sky. Horus was believed to be the protector of Egypt. Usually depicted as a man with the head of a hawk.

Isis
A protective goddess who used magic to help people in need. Isis was the wife of Osiris and the mother of Horus. Often depicted as a woman with a headdress in the shape of a throne. Isis is also sometimes shown carrying the baby Horus.

Khnum
Creation god. Usually shown as a man with the head of a ram. Sometimes wore a feathered crown containing the sun disc.

Ma'at
Goddess of truth, justice and harmony. Daughter of Ra.

Nephthys
Protective goddess of the dead. Nephthys was the sister of Isis and Osiris, wife of Seth and mother of Anubis.

Nut
Goddess of the sky. Nut is often shown arched above her husband Geb, god of the earth.

Osiris
God of the dead, resurrection and ruler of the underworld. Usually depicted as a mummified man wearing a white headdress with feathers.

Ptah
God of craftsmen.

Seth
God of the desert, storms, violence and everything that was a threat to Egypt.

Sekhmet
Goddess of war. Usually shown as a woman with the head of a lioness.

Thoth
God of writing and knowledge. Usually depicted as a man with the head of an ibis. Also sometimes depicted as an ibis or baboon.

Ra (Re)
God of the sun. Usually shown as a man with the head of a hawk wearing a headdress containing the sun disk.
